Source file for U10 custom background

Here is the Flash FLA source for the Neon Genesis background from my previous post.  It includes all the code and gfx for the analog clock and rotating background image.  Just replace the 4 Neon Genesis images with your own 320x240 images and change the gradient colors of the gutter bars and the clock and you'll have your own custom U10 background.

Note: to use this source file you must have Macromedia Flash Profession 8 installed.

Some things to keep in mind if you decide to modify the file beyond the images and colors:

• If you try to capture keypress from the U10 in the background you may disable the internal navigation of the U10 rendering it useless.  Be careful!  If you happen to destroy the nav on your U10, you can attach it to the PC and wait.  The U10 will automatically make the data connection to the PC if you don't do anything for a moment.  Once connected, write over the faulty JFU file with a static background JFU and disconnect the device.  It should reboot and give you back functionality.
• Too much animation will slow the interface to the point where it is difficult to use. Use animation sparingly.
• Placing large fields of bold color in the center of your background will significantly degrade the readability of the U10 menus.  Try to keep the center of the background dark and neutral for best results.

Custom iRiver U10 Flash Background

Because the Flash Lite implementation (version 1.1) on the iRiver U10 does not support loading raw JPG files, all pictures that you transfer to the U10 are first converted to Flash SWFs and renamed with a JFU extension by the iRiver Picture Plus software.  By overwriting these files with custom Flash SWF files, it is possible to have much richer background content for the U10 than just static images.

I've created a few sample backgrounds that have an analog clock with date and rotating images in the background.  Because of the performance limitation of the device, backgrounds with too much animation or processing will significantly slow down the interface navigation.  I've found that running the analog clock and rotating the background image every 20 or 30 seconds is about the limit of these customized backgrounds before the device becomes difficult to use.
